Villa de Leyva is one of the most beautiful colonial towns in Colombia. You must visit it if you love history, culture, and peaceful landscapes. Its Plaza Mayor, one of the largest squares in South America, is surrounded by cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses that will take you back in time. Villa de Leyva should definitely be on your bucket list because it combines history, nature, and unique traditions.

 

 

WHERE TO GO

Fossils, El Infiernito, Pozos Azules, artisan shops.

In Villa de Leyva, you must visit the Paleontological Museum, where you can see ancient fossils. You should also check out El Infiernito, an archaeological site that was used by the Muiscas. If you walk through the artisan shops, you will find handmade crafts and souvenirs. Another place you could go is the Pozos Azules, small turquoise lakes located just outside the town. You must look around and enjoy the natural beauty of this magical place.

You should try horse riding to explore the surroundings of Villa de Leyva.
If you go hiking in the desert area, you might discover fossils and unique landscapes.
If you visit in August, you will see the Kite Festival, one of the most famous events in Colombia.
You must also visit the Astronomical Observatory, because if the sky is clear, you will have the chance to admire thousands of stars.

You should try local food, especially the almojábanas and the cocido boyacense.
You might want to take a jacket, because the weather can be cold at night.
